The love affair between Los Angeles pop-punk royalty The Dollyrots‘ Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar) began in their eighth-grade middle school days. Any relationship that lasts that long should be applauded, but their ability to manage to stay strong while also being in a band together is quite rare.
Around 2007, When I first heard The Dollyrots, they were playing a gig at the now defunct Los Angeles venue Safari Sam’s as part of the now defunct Kiss Or Kill showcases. Their show was packed with energy from start to finish, which had the audience moving in a love fest of head bobbing, mouths singing, and even a bit of moshing. I remember seeing a fan accidentally get her lip split from another fan’s flailing arm, but the injured kept smiling through it all as she was wrapped up in the performance. Soon after that show I heard the band’s cover of the 1972 Melanie Safka hit “Brand New Key.” The combo of the show experience and this video for “Brand New Key” made me a fan.

Since those early days, the band has gone through numerous members, joined and left Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records, and had numerous commercial, television, and feature film placements. In 2014, Kelly and Luis brought a new baby into the world, and during the same year released their fifth studio album Barefoot and Pregnant.
